Broiler chickens are any breed that is intended specifically to be raised for meat. These birds grow much faster than their egg-laying counterparts so that you can use them for meat earlier than other breeds. They also develop more bodyweight on the same amount of food.
It only takes about 5 weeks for a broiler chicken to reach a weight of 4-5 pounds. This means you can slaughter a broiler chicken after just 5 weeks, though you can wait a bit longer to get bigger birds.
